William Harrison Hill and Mary Jane Woodward were married in a pretty little Church of England chapel named St Peter, the Apostle at Byers Green on December 27, 1884. William was 22 and Mary Jane just 18 and 8 months pregnant with their first child, Thomas William Harrison Hill. Mary Jane’s 20-year-old brother Robert Woodward was one of the witnesses. Mary could not write so signed her name with an X. Her brother Robert and new husband William signed their names beautifully and so must have made great use of the free school attached their little village.
